Une traversée olfactive / An olfactive journey

Une traversée olfactive / An olfactory journey

〉A work of art carries within it the gazes that made it, chose it, loved it. That of the subject who staged themselves. That of the painter who translated them. That of the collector who united them with others.

And what if visual perception, so central to our relationship with art, did not exhaust everything a work has to offer?

Artist Nathalie Saint-Oyant presents an installation that extends this question through a sense long held at a distance by art history. She invites visitors to move « beyond the gaze, » to forge a more intimate relationship with the works, calling on the sense of smell, which here becomes a medium of knowledge.

For a selection of works from the collection, the artist isolates a textile fragment depicted within the image, a piece of fabric, a garment, a veil, and gives it its own material and olfactory existence, embodying the work in a different way. These olfactory atmospheres, developed in collaboration with Meabh Mc Curtin, exclusive perfumer at IFF (International Flavors et Fragrances), are not a reconstruction of the past. They are a rereading, a new and deliberate interpretation of the work.

To draw near, to smell: the exhibition invites gestures not usually made before a painting. This deliberate act of approach breaks the frontal distance of the gaze and establishes an unprecedented closeness with the object.

Textile, chosen as the guiding thread of the exhibition and the medium through which the olfactory atmospheres are presented, connects to Jacques Doucet, the great couturier of the Belle Époque, collector and patron, at the origin of the Angladon collection.

This journey pays tribute to him as well as to Paulette Angladon, who turned her home and her collection into a museum. The gesture that founded this place, transforming beloved objects into a space for sharing, continues here in another form.

The visitor is no longer invited only to look at the works. They are invited to experience them.
